Shyla Victor Navajo Sgraffito Pillow Vase — Monument Valley Buttes & Butterfly, Reversible
A reversible Navajo sgraffito pillow vase by Shyla Victor, hand-engraved and hand-painted on a flattened, disk-form body finished in deep forest green and warm sienna. One face frames a desert landscape — a pair of dark sandstone buttes rising against a brushed terracotta sky, white cumulus clouds and small soaring birds painted across the scene, sage-green brush dotting the foreground. The reverse carries a radiating sunburst of carved sawtooth bands centered on a stylized butterfly, the cream slip cut back through darker grounds to expose the underclay.
The decoration is built through sgraffito — carving through the painted surface to reveal the lighter clay beneath — a technique Navajo potters such as Victor have developed into highly graphic, finely incised work. The matte-finished body is signed on the underside "Shyla Victor / Navajo", with the engraved and painted designs continuing across both display faces so the piece can be turned to show either subject.
CONDITION
Good. Scuffing and shelf wear present, including paint loss and abrasion to the base edge. Designs on both faces remain crisp and intact.
