1920s French Forged Iron & Parcel-Gilt Console Table with Rouge Marble Top
A serpentine-fronted console built on a base of forged iron worked into the scrolling vocabulary of the French Rococo — opposing C-scrolls rising from the legs, an apron of running waves, and an arched X-stretcher centered on a pierced shell crest. The dark green-black iron is selectively highlighted in parcel gilt: applied acanthus leaves cascade down the front legs, gilt rosette paterae mark each corner block, and the stretcher's shell and foliate accents catch the eye against the matte ground. The legs terminate in scrolled, leaf-wrapped feet.
The rouge breccia marble top carries deep red-brown veining shot through with grey, cream, and green, with a molded edge following the table's shaped profile. Beneath the apron sits a single dovetailed drawer with a finished wood back — the hand-cut joinery and warm patina to the secondary timber consistent with period cabinetwork. The whole reads as a decorator's statement piece in the Louis XV taste, intended to anchor an entry hall or stand against a pier.
CONDITION
Good overall with age-appropriate wear throughout. The iron shows scratches, chips, scuffing, and surface rust oxidation; the parcel-gilt highlights are honest and softly worn. The marble top carries scratches throughout the polished surface, and one screw has been replaced. No remarkable damage. Distressed by design.
