Late 19th Century Welsh Primitive Pine Step-Back Cupboard with Diamond-Carved Pilasters
A country-made step-back cupboard in solid pine, built in two parts that stack for a tall open-shelf hutch over an enclosed base. The folk styling is the draw here: the two upper drawers and the canted front stiles carry hand-applied diamond and lozenge motifs, with turned wood knobs and brass studs marking out each drawer face. The base houses a pair of paneled doors over a single interior shelf, and the upper section presents two fixed display shelves against a planked back. Bracket feet and a stepped cornice finish the form.
The construction is honest and primitive throughout — plank backs, square-cut nails, simple paneled doors, and the slightly irregular proportions of a piece made by hand rather than in a factory. It is unmarked. A key lock is fitted to one base door but is non-functional. The cupboard separates into two pieces for easier transport.
CONDITION
Good. Honest wear throughout consistent with age and use, including a long split running down one base door panel and scattered knots, checks, and old surface marks. The fitted key lock on the base is present but non-functional; drawers and doors operate.
