Description

Clyde Harwick Brutalist Torch-Cut Copper & Steel Freestanding Sculpture, Signed

A freestanding Brutalist sculpture by Clyde Harwick, built from torch-cut copper sheet and slender steel rods that fan and arc through the composition like wind-driven grass. The sheet metal is worked into curling, blade-like forms with deckled, flame-cut edges, their surfaces moving through brass-gold, oxidized green, and deep heat-blued tones earned at the torch. Brazing beads pool along the seams as both structure and texture, and the rods spray upward and outward to give the piece its sense of motion. It is maker-marked "Ch" at the base.

Work in this idiom belongs to the wave of welded-metal studio sculpture that followed Silas Seandel and Curtis Jeré into the American interior of the 1960s and 70s — gestural, raw, and meant to read in the round from any angle. The interplay of solid curling planes against the linear burst of rods rewards placement where light can catch the varied patina across its surfaces.

Authenticity

Maker-marked "Ch" at the base, confirming attribution to Clyde Harwick.

CONDITION

Very Good and structurally sound, with no remarkable damage. Surfaces show the varied patina and minor signs of display expected of the form. The torch-cut edges, oxidation tones, and brazing texture are designed elements, not flaws.
