Lance Keene Acoma Pueblo Polychrome Olla with Parrot & Geometric Motifs
A polychrome Acoma Pueblo olla by Lance Keene of San Fidel, New Mexico, signed on the underside "L. Keene / Acoma N.M." The wide-shouldered, low-set form rises to a short cylindrical neck, the white slip ground carrying a banded design in black and terracotta. The shoulder is worked in classic Acoma vocabulary — opposed parrot-beak and fine-line geometric elements bracketed by orange triangular fills, with a dense hatched and cross-hatched collar at the neck. A scalloped fan border circles the lower body above the unpainted base.
Acoma painters thin their walls dramatically and pull these fine-line patterns freehand, the precision of the brushwork serving as the maker's signature as much as the name beneath. The intentional break in the encircling design line — the "spirit line" or ceremonial path — follows long Pueblo practice: the pattern is left open so the work's life is not enclosed. An accompanying maker's card identifies the piece as the work of Lance Keene, Acoma Pottery.
Authenticity
Signed "L. Keene / Acoma N.M." on the underside (shown in reference photos), accompanied by a Lance Keene / Acoma Pottery maker's business card and the traditional Acoma pottery card describing the work.
