Description

Crocker Chair Co. Quarter-Sawn Oak Bankers Swivel-Tilt Desk Chair, Early 1900s

An early twentieth-century oak office chair by the Crocker Chair Co., the maker's name cast into the iron tilt mechanism beneath the seat. Built in the bankers' or captain's-chair pattern: a curved crest rail above seven vertical back slats, broad shaped arms, and a saddle-contoured solid seat, all in richly figured quarter-sawn oak. The chair rides on a four-leg swivel base fitted with brass-capped casters and a cast iron spring mechanism allowing 360-degree swivel, spring tilt/rock, and adjustable seat height.

This pattern furnished courthouses, law offices, and bank floors across the country from roughly 1900 through the 1920s. A small brass tag at the rear seat rail retains a partial serial number. The combination of figured oak, exposed cast iron hardware, and original brass casters makes these chairs an enduring favorite for desks and work-from-home setups alike.

CONDITION

Fair and structurally sturdy. Heavy wear throughout consistent with long working use: scuffing, fading, and finish wear and loss across the oak surfaces, with the seat showing the most use. Swivel, tilt, and height-adjustment mechanism functions. Brass serial tag is worn with a partial, faded number.
