American Hoop-Back Windsor Rocking Chair, Pierced Fiddle Splat, c. 1880–1920
A solid-wood rocking chair in the American Windsor tradition, likely dating to the late Victorian period, circa 1880–1920. The bent-wood hoop crest rail arcs over five turned spindles flanking a central pierced fiddle/vase splat with decorative cutouts — a Queen Anne-influenced detail set within an otherwise stick Windsor form, a hybrid feature that distinguishes this example from plainer spindle-only production of the era. Below, the shaped oval saddle seat is supported by four baluster-turned legs connected by an H-stretcher and cross-stretcher arrangement, all carrying down to applied curved rockers.
The combination of a Windsor hoop back with a Queen Anne-derived splat places this chair in transitional production common to New England and Midwestern shops during the late 19th century, when regional chairmakers frequently blended formal decorative elements into utility stick-chair forms. The resulting hybrid appealed to households that wanted a step above a plain spindle rocker without the cost of fully carved furniture. The proportions and dimensions — confirmed adult scale — and the honest surface wear make this a strong candidate for farmhouse, Colonial Revival, or Americana-focused interiors where authentic patina is the point.
CONDITION
Good and sturdy with age-appropriate wear throughout. Scuffing and finish wear/loss across the surface, most pronounced along the front edge of the seat where the dark finish has chipped through to a lighter underlayer — consistent with a refinished surface over original paint. Joints are solid and the chair is stable.
