Description

Porsgrund Norway "Farmers Rose" Folk-Pattern Porcelain Service, 1973 — 44 Pieces

Porsgrunds Porselaensfabrik has been Norway's foremost fine porcelain house since 1885, and the Farmers Rose — known in Norwegian as Bonde-mønster, or "peasant pattern" — is among its most beloved folk designs. The motif pulls directly from the rosemaling tradition: hand-painted tulip and acanthus forms in warm red, cobalt blue, harvest yellow, and forest green, winding across an ivory ground and finished with gilt trim. It's the visual vocabulary of Norwegian painted furniture and farmhouse decoration — celebrations, wedding chests, Sunday best — translated onto fine porcelain and dated here to 1973 by the anchor-and-PP backstamp. The pattern has been cherished by Norwegian families and Scandinavian diaspora communities for generations, and complete services with accessory pieces intact are increasingly hard to find together.

This lot is notably well-rounded: 14 teacups and 16 saucers, a stack of dinner plates and salad plates, two square serving plates, three pedestal egg cups and one smaller egg cup, a salt shaker, a lidded sugar bowl (spoon absent, lid present), and the standout piece — the lidded teapot, tall and elegant, with its spout and handle intact. Forty-four pieces in all, enough to set a generous table and still have the breakfast accessories that separate a real service from a partial one.

CONDITION

Good overall. Decoration and gilt remain bright and well-defined across the set. The interior of the teapot shows light tan staining at the base consistent with use. The sugar bowl lid is present but the spoon is absent.
