Ottoman Istanbul Hand-Painted Beef Bone Box — Hippodrome & Bosphorus Scenes
A compact decorative box constructed from beef bone panels, hand-painted across every exterior surface with continuous panoramic scenes of Ottoman Istanbul. The front and sides depict a lively hippodrome racing scene — two riders on black horses at full gallop, watched by robed and turbaned figures in red and blue standing among colorful markers arranged across a packed-earth course, with a long arcade of ochre masonry rising behind them. The end panel and lid exterior shift to the Bosphorus waterfront: a mosque complex with multiple domes and minarets rising above red-roofed buildings along the shore, cypress trees flanking the skyline, gulls skimming the water below, and a tall-masted sailing vessel in the harbor. The lid interior carries its own painted scene — the same waterfront mosque view, rendered with a loose, confident hand, with a small skiff nestled at the right edge. The base panels are painted in a streaked olive and sage ground.
The box form itself is characteristically Ottoman in profile: a rounded barrel lid with a scalloped and footed base cut in a repeating arch pattern, giving the silhouette a distinctly architectural quality. Construction is all bone panels joined at the seams. The interior is velvet-lined, unpainted. The maker is unmarked.
CONDITION
Excellent. No damage noted. Paint is intact and clean across all surfaces with no flaking, cracking, or loss to the pictorial areas.
