Description

Flintridge China "Rosebud" Gray & Gold Dinner Service for 12, 63 Pieces

Flintridge China produced some of the finest American porcelain of the postwar decades from its Pasadena, California operation — thin-walled, vitreous, and finished to a standard that put it in direct conversation with Lenox and the better European imports. This 63-piece service carries the pattern collectors know as Rosebud: a naturalistic spray of pink rosebuds and green foliage centered on an ivory ground, framed by a broad soft-gray band and a fine gold edge line. The backstamp — FLINTRIDGE CHINA / MADE IN CALIFORNIA / U.S.A. beneath a paired-lions crest — dates the service to the active production years of the late 1940s through the early 1960s.

The footed teacups are the standout element. Where the plate forms follow the classic gray-band format, the cups depart with a sculpted, faceted bowl lifted on a solid gilt pedestal foot — a design move that reads as confident and slightly theatrical, more Hollywood than Pasadena suburb. The rosebud spray repeats inside each cup, visible to the drinker with every sip. The single oval serving dish omits the gray band entirely, presenting the rosebud motif on a clean ivory ground with a single gold rim — a deliberate design variation that keeps the serving piece from competing with the dinner plates it accompanies. The set is table-ready across all lines: dinner, salad, and dessert plates with a spare; saucers; thirteen footed cups; and the serving dish.

CONDITION

Good overall. Gold rim lines show finish wear and some loss consistent with decades of use, and plate surfaces carry light utensil marks. No cracks or chips noted.
