Description

Hand-Forged Iron Adze-Worked Candle Scoop / Wall Sconce, Artisan Blacksmith

The form is immediately legible as a scoop: a deep, enclosed trough pocket rising from a broad, flat body that tapers to a pointed tail, with an offset handle extending from the opposite end at an upward angle. Every exterior surface — top, sides, underside, and face — is covered in a dense, overlapping field of adze or chisel strikes, each blow leaving a faceted impression that collectively produces a surface resembling worked bark or hammered scale. The candle pocket opens at the top of the body and is sized to hold a candle up to 3½" in diameter; the interior of the well carries the same worked texture as the exterior, an unusual detail that signals a maker working far beyond the minimum. A pierced suspension hole at the narrow tail allows wall hanging. At over four pounds, this is unambiguously the weight of hand-forged iron made to endure.

The scoop geometry — elongated body, deep integrated pocket, angled handle — places this outside standard sconce conventions, suggesting a blacksmith who either adapted a working form to a new purpose or invented something entirely his own. The surface elaboration is deliberate, uniform, and relentless; it covers every inch inside and out and belongs to someone who considered this object worth the extra hours. The identification as a wall-mountable candle holder is consistent with the suspension hole, pocket sizing, and form factor, but the piece is strong enough visually to command a wall on its own terms.

CONDITION

Good. Rust and oxidation throughout, consistent with aged hand-forged iron; surface pitting is present across the body and is stable. The adze tooling remains crisp on both exterior and interior surfaces, and the mounting hole is intact and undamaged.
