Art Bazaar Boulle-Style Domed Decorative Box & Floral Repoussé Hexagonal Box, Pair
A pair of decorative lidded boxes by Art Bazaar, produced 2009. The larger of the two is a domed, fluted cabinet-form box in the manner of Boulle marquetry — faux-tortoiseshell panels in russet red worked over with gilt acanthus scrollwork and ebonized line borders, the whole crowned by a carved giltwood acorn-and-leaf finial. The serpentine paneled body sits on gilt ball-and-leaf feet and opens via a hinged dome lid to a black-painted interior. The smaller box is hexagonal, with a gilt-and-black diaper-pattern ground, red faux-stone front panels bearing molded floral-basket motifs, and a cast brass openwork scroll finial above a giltwood and ebonized lid.
Both pieces draw on French André-Charles Boulle ornamental tradition — the red-and-gold arabesque vocabulary of late 17th-century cabinetwork translated into a decorative accent. The two boxes complement one another in palette and finish while differing in form and scale, making for a layered tabletop or shelf grouping. The larger box carries the maker's labels in the supplemental reference photo.
CONDITION
Good and fully functional; both lids open and close, the larger on intact brass hinges. Tested. There is finish wear and loss with some chipping, touched up in areas and not noticeable when the lids are closed. Light surface handling marks consistent with display use.
