Loren W. Acton STS-51F Signed Index Card — Spacelab 2 Payload Specialist
Autographed 3" × 5" index card signed in black ink by Loren W. Acton, payload specialist aboard STS-51F, the Spacelab 2 mission flown on Challenger in July–August 1985. Acton added his mission designation beneath the signature, with a date notation of 12/13/97 in the lower corner. A solar physicist by training, Acton flew representing Lockheed's Palo Alto Research Laboratory to operate the mission's suite of solar observation instruments.
STS-51F is remembered for its dramatic abort-to-orbit — the only such event in the Shuttle program's history — when a main engine shut down mid-ascent, forcing the crew into a lower-than-planned orbit that ultimately still completed its science objectives. Acton's tenure as a non-career astronaut places him among the small group of research scientists who flew Spacelab missions, making his signed material a focused niche within spaceflight autograph collecting.
Provenance
This card comes directly from the collection of the individual who personally acquired the autograph from Acton. A certificate of authenticity issued by Mesilla Valley Estate Sales accompanies the piece, along with a signed letter from the consignor attesting to the circumstances of acquisition.
CONDITION
Very Good. Signature and notations are bold and fully legible on a clean, unlined card face. Light handling consistent with age; no creasing or staining noted.
