Description

Spanish Colonial Style Repoussé Pressed Tin Wall Mirror with Arched Crest

A wall-mountable mirror framed in pressed tin worked in deep repoussé relief, following the decorative vocabulary of the Spanish Colonial tradition. The shaped, arched crest rises to a central peak flanked by stepped shoulders — a silhouette drawn directly from colonial-era retablo and altar frames — and carries a symmetrical field of stylized florals, scrolling acanthus foliage, and rosettes flanking a central palmette, all enclosed by raised beaded borders. The wide surround continues the program without interruption: vigorous acanthus scrolls climb the vertical stiles, blooming rosettes anchor each corner, and a continuous beaded inner edge frames the rectangular mirror plate.

The high-relief metalwork catches and throws light across its bright, hand-worked surface, an effect that distinguishes hand-formed repoussé from factory-stamped ornament. Construction is sheet tin worked over a wooden form and tacked at edges and joins — consistent with workshop production in the Spanish Colonial craft tradition, where tin became the everyman's silver after the colonial church established its visual grammar of scroll, flower, and bead.

CONDITION

Very Good overall. Scuffing to the bright tin surface consistent with handling and age. Mirror plate is clear and sound.
