Description

Italian Baroque Walnut Credenzino with Diamond-Lozenge Doors & Working Key, Late 17th–Early 18th C.

A small-format Italian Baroque credenza — sometimes called a credenzino at this scale — built in solid walnut and consistent with North or Central Italian workshop production, attributed to circa late 17th to early 18th century. The case carries the full vocabulary of the period: a molded cornice top above two dovetailed upper drawers with turned wooden knobs, twin paneled doors below ornamented with applied diamond-lozenge moldings and turned bosses, and a stepped plinth base resting on bracket feet. The lozenge-and-boss door scheme is strongly associated with Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna cabinet shops of the period, where it served as the regional shorthand for serious domestic storage furniture.

The walnut is solid throughout — confirmed by grain on the unfinished back boards and interior surfaces — and the wide back planks show tool marks consistent with hand-planing. The interior retains its original fixed shelf and wood-paneled back. The original iron lock mechanism is intact and the working key is included, a survival that is increasingly uncommon on case pieces of this age. The surface remains unrestored, carrying a depth of patina that collectors of period Italian furniture tend to prefer over refinished examples. Spanish Colonial and Mediterranean interior aesthetic overlaps make this type broadly appealing to collectors furnishing hacienda-style spaces.

History

The credenza emerged in the Italian Renaissance as the principal storage form of the dining room and reception hall — its name derived from the act of credenza, the tasting of food and drink before serving. By the Baroque period, the form had matured into the deeply paneled, geometrically ornamented case piece seen here. The diamond-lozenge door treatment with applied turned bosses became a signature of North and Central Italian production between roughly 1680 and 1730, executed in regional walnut and intended for substantial household use rather than courtly display. Smaller examples like this one functioned in secondary rooms — antechambers, studies, sacristies — where storage with lock-and-key security was needed at a more intimate scale.

Collector's Note

LiveAuctioneers records show comparable Italian 17th–18th century walnut credenzas selling in the $800–$2,500 range depending on condition and completeness; higher-condition examples with intact hardware list $3,500–$8,000 retail on 1stDibs and Chairish. The working key and original lock are a meaningful differentiator at any tier of the market. Attribution to a North or Central Italian workshop rests on construction and decorative vocabulary.

CONDITION

Good, consistent with extended age and use. Surface shows scratches, chips, scuffing, and finish wear and loss throughout; base molding, door panels, and cornice show worm/insect activity expected for European furniture of this period. Splits and shrinkage cracks present in door panels and back boards; one bracket foot shows significant wood loss at the toe. Original iron lock present and functional with the included key; hinges and hardware sound. Case remains structurally stable.
