English Art Deco Oak & Burl Walnut Side-by-Side Secretary Bookcase, 1930s–40s
A handsome English Art Deco side-by-side secretary from the 1930s–40s, combining a central drop-front desk with flanking glazed display cabinets in a single architectural silhouette. The bookmatched burl walnut veneers run with strong figure across the fall front and three graduated dovetailed drawers below, each fitted with cast brass rosette pulls. The arched central crest steps up between the two bow-fronted glazed end cabinets, whose doors carry applied Gothic-arch tracery — a quietly theatrical detail that lifts the piece above standard interwar cabinetry.
Drop the fall front and the interior reveals a brown vinyl writing surface, six pigeonhole compartments, and a single small central drawer. Each glazed cabinet holds two fixed (removable) shelves at staggered heights for displaying books, china, or collectibles. The whole assembly rests on shaped Queen Anne pad feet, a traditional flourish under an otherwise streamlined Deco-era form.
CONDITION
Good overall and structurally sturdy. Age-appropriate scuffing and finish wear/loss throughout, with a small veneer chip to the lower right corner of the right cabinet door and a stable split on the lowest shelf of the left cabinet. Key is absent.
