Astronaut Gary Payton Signed Index Card — STS-51-C, First Dedicated DoD Shuttle Mission
A black-ink autograph of Gary E. Payton, U.S. Air Force officer and Payload Specialist aboard Space Shuttle Discovery, signed on a 3½" × 5" index card and inscribed with his mission designation, STS-51-C. The signature is bold and unhurried, with the mission line written directly beneath in his hand. The verso is unmarked apart from faint offset bleed-through of the ink, consistent with a single-sided autograph on lightweight card stock.
Payton flew on STS-51-C in January 1985 — the first Space Shuttle mission flown entirely for the U.S. Department of Defense. The flight's payload remains classified to this day, lending the mission a lasting Cold War mystique. A signature tied explicitly to that flight carries more interest than a name-only cut, and this card comes with documentation establishing a clean chain of custody from the original collector.
Provenance
This card comes directly from the collection of the individual who personally acquired the autograph. A Certificate of Authenticity issued by Mesilla Valley Estate Sales accompanies the piece, along with a signed letter from the original acquirer attesting to its provenance. Both documents transfer to the buyer at pickup.
CONDITION
Very Good. The signature and inscription are clean, dark, and fully legible. The card is bright with light handling; the verso shows faint ink offset from the front-side autograph and no other markings.
