Michael Collins Signed Apollo 11 NASA Portrait with Moon Landing First Day Cover Cancellation
Black-and-white NASA presentation portrait of Michael Collins, Apollo 11 Command Module Pilot, boldly signed in black ink across the upper right. The official agency photograph captures Collins in business suit with the NASA lapel pin, his name printed in the bottom margin. The lower portion of the sheet carries a printed "First Man on the Moon" 10¢ air mail stamp alongside two cancellation marks — "Washington, Sept. 9, 1969 DC" and "Moon Landing, Jul. 20, 1969, U.S.A." — with the "First Day of Issue" cancellation tying the portrait to the commemorative philatelic release.
Collins flew solo aboard the command module Columbia while Armstrong and Aldrin descended to the lunar surface, orbiting the Moon alone for over twenty hours — a role he later reflected on in his memoir Carrying the Fire. The combination of an authentic signature with the period moon-landing cancellation makes this a desirable crossover piece for both space-program and first-day-cover collectors.
Authenticity
Mesilla Valley Estate Sales guarantees this signature authentic and will issue a Certificate of Authenticity to the winning bidder.
CONDITION
Very Good. The signature is bold and unfaded with strong contrast against the gray background. Light handling wear and minor edge softening to the sheet; the printed stamp and cancellations remain crisp.
