Space Shuttle STS-4 Cover Signed by Ken Mattingly & Henry Hartsfield, Edwards
Commemorative Space Shuttle cover marking the landing of STS-4 at Edwards Air Force Base on July 4, 1982, cancelled with an "EDWARDS, CA" postmark dated that day and a "FOR BENEFITS ON EARTH / SPACE SHUTTLE / NASA" cachet. The card carries the Exploring the Moon 18c stamp alongside a 2c "Freedom to Speak Out" issue, with a German-language caption describing the shuttle's landing accompanied by a NASA T-38. The front photograph shows Columbia rolling out on the Edwards runway.
Signed in ink by both members of the STS-4 crew: commander Thomas K. "Ken" Mattingly and pilot Henry W. "Hank" Hartsfield. STS-4 was the fourth and final orbital test flight of the Space Shuttle program, and its July 4 landing drew President Reagan and a crowd to Edwards. Mattingly, previously the command module pilot for Apollo 16, and Hartsfield each carry deep tenure in the astronaut corps, making a dual-signed flight cover of this mission a strong crossover piece for space and philatelic collectors alike.
CONDITION
Very Good. Both signatures are bold and legible; stamps and cachet are clean and crisp. Minor handling consistent with an early-1980s philatelic cover.
