Tlaquepaque Mexican Redware Pottery, Group of 4 Hand-Painted Terracotta Pieces
Group of four hand-painted Mexican redware pieces in the Tlaquepaque tradition of Jalisco, comprising two shallow square dishes and two narrow rectangular troughs. The larger dishes feature classic folk-art tableaux — a seated sombrero-clad figure beneath a stylized tree, flanked by organ cactus and prickly pear, rendered in the signature palette of cream, sage green, slate blue, and ochre against burnt-sienna ground. Cross-stitch and feather-leaf borders frame each scene. Underside of one piece carries an impressed "MEXICO" mark.
Tlaquepaque pottery from the mid-twentieth century captured the romantic vision of rural Mexican life that defined the era's tourist trade and inspired generations of folk-art collectors from California to the borderlands. The pieces here likely served as bandejas (serving trays) and small ofrenda or condiment vessels. The two scalloped-rim troughs show pierced scrollwork bands and survive with their bright glaze intact.
CONDITION
Good overall with light scuffing and signs of use consistent with age; no chips, no remarkable damage, minor utensil marks. Paint and glaze remain bright with strong color saturation throughout.
