LNER Flying Scotsman 1969 U.S.A. Tour Brass-Plated Side Lamp
A British railway side lamp attributed to the 1969 North American tour of LNER No. 4472 "Flying Scotsman", carrying a screwed brass identification plate engraved "FLYING SCOTSMAN / U.S.A. 1969 / SIDE LAMP." The body is black-painted tinplate and sheet steel of standard British rolling-stock pattern, with a domed chimney and oil reservoir at the top, a large bull's-eye clear glass lens at the front, and a hinged side door fitted with a removable red glass roundel filter panel — the filter intact and present. Inside, the original brass oil burner is stamped Sherwood of Nottingham, a recognized period supplier to British railway lamp manufacturers. Wire bail handle above, side D-rings for mounting, and ventilation perforations along the lower edge.
The Flying Scotsman's 1969 North American tour, organized under owner Alan Pegler, sent the locomotive across the United States and Canada and remains one of the most documented chapters in post-war British steam history. Lamps and equipment specifically labeled for the tour are uncommon in the open market — the engraved brass plate ties this object directly to that event rather than to anonymous railway service. Original unrestored surface throughout, the condition collectors prefer.
History
LNER Class A3 No. 4472 Flying Scotsman was built in 1923 at Doncaster Works and became the most famous steam locomotive in the world. Saved from scrapping by railway preservationist Alan Pegler in 1963, the engine departed for the United States in 1969 to promote British trade, hauling a nine-coach exhibition train across the country. The tour ran from Boston to Houston to San Francisco and into Canada, drawing crowds at every stop. Financial difficulties stranded the locomotive in California in 1970, and it remained there until rescued by Sir William McAlpine in 1973 and returned home. Equipment fitted or marked for the U.S. tour represents a discrete and identifiable category of Flying Scotsman railwayana.

The brass identification plate is consistent with period British railway practice in style, engraving, and screw hardware, and the Sherwood burner is correct for the period. Factory application of the plate versus retrospective fitting cannot be confirmed without supporting paperwork; offered as attributed to the Flying Scotsman 1969 U.S.A. Tour. CONDITION
Good, original unrestored. Surface oxidation, paint scuffing, and light corrosion at seams consistent with age and working use; no structural damage. All components present and functional including the red filter panel, Sherwood brass burner, hinged door, and both glass lenses.
