Indian Mughal-Style Carved Sheesham & Bone Inlay Folding Tripod Side Table
An Indian folding side table in the long Mughal-influenced tradition of pierced floral carving and fine bone inlay, executed in sheesham (Indian rosewood). The circular top centers on an elaborate bone-inlay mandala — a radiating eight-petal rosette surrounded by stylized poppies, vines, and scrolling tendrils — bordered by a band of diamond-and-floret motifs, then a deeply pierced ring of openwork foliage carved through the wood itself. A perimeter of diamond bone studs finishes the edge.
The three shaped legs lift out and fold flat via a brass hinge mechanism, each leg inlaid with a delicate trailing leaf-spray in bone and accented with small diamond studs. This collapsible tripod construction has been produced for well over a century in workshops across northern India — Hoshiarpur, Saharanpur, and Kashmir — originally for export and for use as portable occasional, prayer, or hookah tables. The combination of relief-carved jali borders with bone marquetry remains a signature of the form.
CONDITION
Good overall. Finish shows wear and minor loss consistent with age and use. A small split and crack are present in the top. A pair of bone inlays is lost; the remainder of the inlay reads tight and complete. Folding mechanism operates correctly.
