Description

Early 20th C. Felt Souvenir Pennants — Adirondack Mts., Glens Falls NY, Damariscotta ME, Indian Island ME

A group of four early twentieth-century felt souvenir pennants from the golden age of American tourist travel, each printed with bold chromolithographed graphics typical of the era's roadside and resort trade. The lot includes a navy Adirondack Mts. pennant with a standing whitetail buck framed in gilt scrollwork, a red Souvenir of Glens Falls, N.Y. pennant featuring a chief in profile with full feathered headdress, a green Damariscotta, Me. pennant with a similar chief portrait, and a tan Indian Island, Me. pennant embellished with applied dyed feathers in red, blue, green, yellow, and white over a printed chief figure.

Pennants of this type were sold at depots, hotels, and curio shops from the 1910s through the 1950s, hung in dens and dorm rooms as proof of travel and trophies of the American road. The Indian Island piece, made on the Penobscot reservation in Maine, is the most folk-art driven of the group — the applied feathers a hallmark of Penobscot-made souvenir work sold to summer visitors. A handwritten tag on the Glens Falls pennant reads "1940's–50's Red Pennant A Taste of Nostalgia #20."

CONDITION

Fair overall with age-appropriate wear throughout the group. Fading and discoloration across all four pieces, most pronounced on the Damariscotta and Indian Island pennants. The Damariscotta pennant is missing one hanging tassel. Felt remains intact with no major losses; printed graphics legible across all four.
