Description

Joan Fine "Endangered Species"

A large, contemplative female figure — rendered half-living, half-skeletal in flowing sienna linocut lines — anchors this 1991 conservation work by New Jersey artist Joan Fine. Around her body orbit dozens of endangered animals, each a finely detailed black vignette: gorillas, African and Asian elephants, American bison, humpback whales, sea turtles, a bald eagle in mid-stoop, zebra, rhinoceros, tiger, leopard, giant panda, gray wolves, a crane, an owl, a macaw, and a scallop shell. A red globe sits upper left, and a rifle-scope crosshair with concentric target rings is laid across the composition — the message direct and unmistakable. Two small red chop seals mark the figure's torso.

The work is built in two physical layers: a linocut on deckle-edged paper carries the figure, the flowing lines, and the target motif, while the black animal vignettes print on a clear acetate overlay registered above it — giving the creatures a floating, orbiting quality distinct from the hand-cut ground. The title "Endangered Species" is inscribed in pencil at lower left and the sheet is signed and dated "Joan Fine '91" at lower right. The chop seals reflect the cross-pollination of Asian relief tradition common among New York–area printmakers of the period. Fine exhibited in New Jersey and New York galleries; this impression comes from the collection of a former gallery owner.
