R.C. Blume Oil on Masonite Portrait of a Lion & Lioness, Signed and Dated 1978
An original oil on Masonite by R.C. Blume, signed lower right and dated 10-23-78. The composition pairs a lion and lioness in close head-to-head intimacy, rising out of a band of tawny grass against a saturated lime-green field. The artist works the male's mane in long, gestural strokes of ochre, umber, and black, while the lioness is rendered in softer, blended tones — the contrast in handling giving each animal its own character. Whiskers and fur highlights are picked out in fine white linework over the built-up surface.
The flat green ground and graphic blades of grass place the piece firmly in the folk-naturalist vein of late-1970s amateur and regional wildlife painting, where bold color choices stand in for atmospheric realism. Housed in its original stained wood molded frame, presented without glass as intended for an oil.
CONDITION
Very Good with no remarkable damage. The Masonite panel is stable and the paint surface is sound; light surface grime and minor frame wear consistent with age. Frame is solid wood with scattered handling marks.
