Ilse Lanphere Oil on Masonite — Mykonos, Greece Village Courtyard Scene
A bright Cycladic courtyard rendered in oil on Masonite, signed lower left Ilse Lanphere and inscribed "Mykonos, Greece" in pencil on the reverse. The scene gathers the architectural vocabulary of the Greek islands — whitewashed plaster walls, twin curving staircases flanking a shadowed passage, a yellow-railed balcony hung with potted geraniums, and the punctuating color of cobalt-blue shutters and a red plank door. Lanphere works the plaster surfaces with heavy, textured impasto, letting the palette knife build the sun-bleached masonry while keeping the figures loose and gestural.
Daily village life animates the foreground: two women in dark dresses sit handworking against the red door, children play with a dog at the foot of the stairs, and a woman with a basket walks the lane toward distant figures receding into the white-on-white passage. The composition channels the picturesque island-genre painting that flourished as Mykonos became a Mediterranean destination through the mid-to-late twentieth century. Presented in a wood frame with a linen liner, no glass.
CONDITION
Very Good with no remarkable damage. Heavy impasto and textured passages are stable and intact. Frame and linen liner show minor handling wear consistent with age.
