Antique Brass Cuspidor / Spittoon with Weighted Base
A classic turn-of-the-century brass cuspidor, formed in two spun-brass sections joined at the shoulder with a visible solder seam. The wide flared rim, bulbous body, and weighted lower bowl are textbook features of the saloon- and parlor-style spittoons that furnished hotels, barbershops, train cars, and gentlemen's clubs from the late 19th century through the early 20th. The lower chamber is the heavier half — designed to keep the vessel upright when kicked or bumped on a wood floor.
Unmarked, as most utilitarian brass of this type was. The warm honey tone and softly mottled patina speak to decades of handling and display. Today these vessels live a second life as umbrella stands, planters for trailing greenery, magazine catchalls beside a leather chair, or simply as sculptural objects on a hearth.
CONDITION
Very Good. Scuffing and light scratches consistent with shelf storage. No remarkable damage, dings, or dents. Solder seam at the shoulder is sound.
