Norm Russ Haida Argillite Eagle Totem, Northwest Coast Carving
A hand-carved argillite totem by Haida Northwest Coast carver Norm Russ, depicting a commanding Eagle crest figure in the stacked, interlocking composition characteristic of Haida pole iconography. The deep black stone takes a soft, waxy polish that brings out the precision of the formline carving — ovoids, U-forms, and split-U detailing read crisply across the body, wings, and creature faces. Inset red stone discs serve as the eyes of both the Eagle above and the secondary figure below, a traditional accent that anchors the composition against the dark ground. Signed "Norm Russ" in incised script to the underside of the integral base.
Argillite is a carbonaceous shale quarried exclusively from Slatechuck Mountain on Haida Gwaii (Graham Island), British Columbia, and its working has been reserved to Haida carvers for nearly two centuries. The tradition of miniature argillite totems in this format traces to the early 19th-century maritime trade and remains a living art form among contemporary Haida artists. The Eagle is among the two great Haida moieties — alongside the Raven — and its depiction in crest carving carries lineage and hereditary significance specific to the carver's clan.
History
Norm Russ is a Haida carver from Haida Gwaii, British Columbia, working in the argillite tradition that has defined Northwest Coast portable sculpture since the early 1800s. Russ works in the formline visual language codified by generations of Haida masters — a system of primary and secondary forms, ovoids, and U-shapes that organize animal imagery into unified, rhythmically balanced compositions. His carvings follow the classic miniature totem format: stacked crest figures, deep relief, and the characteristic waxy-polish finish that distinguishes well-worked argillite from lesser examples.
Significance & Rarity
Argillite is a protected material with restricted quarry access, ensuring that every authentic piece participates in an unbroken Haida carving lineage. The Eagle crest is among the highest-status heraldic subjects in Haida Northwest Coast art, representing one of the two great moiety clans; its depiction in argillite carries cultural weight beyond mere aesthetic value. The inset red-stone eyes are a hallmark embellishment across quality argillite work of the late 20th century onward, and their presence here, intact and secure, speaks to the care taken in both the making and the keeping of this piece.
CONDITION
Very Good. No damage observed; surfaces retain a clean polish with crisp carved detail throughout. Both red inset eyes are present and secure. Signature to underside of base is legible.
