Pair of Art Deco Foil Silhouette Pictures — Lady with Greyhound & Running Borzois
A charming pair of Art Deco-era reverse-painted silhouette pictures, each rendered on glass with hand-applied metallic foil backing that lends a flickering, jewel-like quality where light catches the figures. The larger picture depicts a fashionably dressed woman on a balustraded terrace, her greyhound looking up attentively beside an overflowing urn of flowers — her gown and the urn glowing with gold and orange foil accents against the cream ground. The smaller picture shows two running borzois in mid-stride, their feathered tails streaming behind, set against a textured woven-paper backdrop within a hammered silvered frame.
Reverse silhouettes of this kind were widely produced in Germany and the United States during the 1920s and 1930s, often sold as parlor decoration in matched or coordinating pairs. The combination of black-painted glass, foil highlights, and decorative borders is characteristic of the period's enthusiasm for refined graphic ornament. Both pieces are framed behind glass and ready to hang.
CONDITION
Good with age-appropriate wear. The larger silhouette shows toning and light foxing to the cream paper ground; the smaller picture is bright with minimal toning. Frames show light rubbing to the finishes. Foil accents remain intact and reflective on both.
