Antique German Hand-Hammered Copper Goose & Fish Repoussé Cake Mold, Dated 1904
A substantial round hand-hammered copper baking mold in the European farmhouse tradition, featuring a deeply repoussé central goose flanked by a small fish, surrounded by feathered grain or grass sprigs and ringed punch-dot ornament. The form is shallow-dished, with a tinned interior surface, four hand-forged brass loop handles with chased crosshatch decoration set top and bottom for hanging, and a rolled rim that retains its original folded edge. The reverse carries an incised cartouche with the initials K.K. and the date 1904, marking it as a presentation or household commission piece.
Molds of this scale and quality were the pride of Central European country kitchens — used for festival breads, sweet puddings, or aspic, then hung on the kitchen wall as decoration the rest of the year. The goose-and-fish iconography is consistent with German or Alsatian regional work, where waterfowl and freshwater fish frequently appeared together on bakeware celebrating harvest and feast days. The tinned interior, hand-chased detail, and dated inscription all point to a single craftsman's commission rather than factory output.
CONDITION
Good with age-appropriate wear throughout. Dings and dents across the body, verdigris and patina to the copper and brass, and interior kitchen residue from period use. No holes or punctures. Tinning to the interior is worn and darkened as expected for a piece of this age.
