Mexican Folk Art Punched Tin Christmas Tree Candelabra, 30-Candle
A striking punched tin Christmas tree candelabra of Mexican folk-art tradition, built to hold 30 taper candles across cascading tiers of stamped sheet-metal boughs. The trunk rises from a flared, domed base worked with concentric bands of repoussé diamonds and wave patterns — the hallmark vocabulary of Mexican hojalata tinwork. Each tier of branches is shaped from ribbed, leaf-form sheet tin terminating in shallow bobèches and cylindrical candle cups, with a faceted five-point star finial crowning the apex on a slender stem.
Tinwork of this style has deep roots in central Mexico — Oaxaca and San Miguel de Allende in particular — where artisans have long transformed humble sheet metal into devotional and celebratory objects. A piece of this scale makes a commanding centerpiece for a holiday table, mantel, or entry console, casting flickering light through its silvery surfaces when the tapers are lit. Candles included as shown; most have been burned but retain ample remaining use.
CONDITION
Good. Light surface oxidation and minor rust spotting to a few bobèches consistent with age and use. Wax residue from prior use present on cups and drip pans. Structure is sound and stands squarely; star finial straight on its stem.
