Pair of Folk Art Weaver's Shuttle Candle Sconces with Brass Cups
An unusual pair of wall sconces fashioned from genuine industrial textile-mill shuttles, repurposed by a craftsperson into single-arm candleholders. Each shuttle retains its original working hardware — the brass tension fittings, steel pirn-clamp mechanism stamped with maker's marks, horsehair bristle brushes, and pointed brass-capped ends — preserving the full character of the loom tool. A turned wooden bobbin remains seated inside the cavity of each shuttle. Mounted to the center of each is a wooden block fitted with a polished brass candle cup sized for a 1" taper.
Shuttles like these were workhorses of early- and mid-20th-century weaving mills, carrying the weft yarn back and forth across the loom at high speed until power-loom technology made them obsolete. Mounted as a pair, they hang vertically with the points oriented up and down, the candle cups projecting forward — equally at home in a rustic, industrial, or textile-history interior.
CONDITION
Good with age-appropriate wear. Wood shows honest patina, minor nicks, and finish variation consistent with original working life. Brass tips and fittings show oxidation and light tarnish. Horsehair brushes intact but worn. Steel hardware shows light surface oxidation. Candle cup assemblies are sound and stable.
