Antique Cast Iron Dachshund Boot Scraper
A heavy cast iron dachshund boot scraper, full-bodied and life-scaled, with the breed's signature long back, deep chest, and stubby legs rendered in confident folk-industrial form. The dog stands braced on four splayed feet, mouth open in a permanent bark, with a looped tail at the rear that doubles as a carrying handle. Rising from the spine is the working element — a vertical iron blade running most of the back length, the edge worn smooth from generations of muddy boots dragged across it at a back door or garden gate.
Boot scrapers in animal form were a popular late-19th and early-20th-century iron-foundry product, and the dachshund was a favorite subject — the elongated silhouette suited the function, and the breed carried particular cachet in the decades around the 1900 World's Fair and the 1930s American dachshund craze. This example is unmarked, as most were, and shows the dry crusty black paint and rust-bloom patina of long outdoor service. A genuine working antique, not a reproduction.
CONDITION
Good with honest outdoor wear. Scuffing, oxidation, and surface corrosion throughout with old black paint flaking to reveal warm rust beneath. No remarkable damage; structurally sound and stable on all four feet. Rustic by design.
