Description

Fisher & Norris "Eagle" Blacksmith's Anvil, 100 lbs, c. Late 19th/Early 20th C.

A substantial single-horn blacksmith's anvil by Fisher & Norris of Trenton, New Jersey — makers of the iconic "Eagle" anvil from 1843 until the company's closure in 1979. Cast in the traditional London pattern with a flat rectangular working face, tapered horn, hardy hole and pritchel hole at the heel, and a four-footed base with mounting lugs at each corner. The waist carries the raised eagle trademark cast into the side, with a numeral cartouche reading "10".

Fisher & Norris pioneered a patented construction method that defined the American anvil trade: a cast iron body with a forge-welded steel face plate, giving the tool the durability of steel where it mattered and the mass of iron where it counted. Smiths recognized them by the distinctive dull ring of the face — quieter than wrought iron anvils, easier on the ears through a long shop day. At 100 lbs, this is a working bench anvil sized for a farrier, wheelwright, or general smith handling lighter forging, riveting, and repair work. The heavy patina, scale, and oxidation across the body indicate decades of shop service followed by long storage. The face retains its flat profile with the expected wear and minor edge chipping of a tool that earned its keep. Decorative for a forge-themed interior, and still serviceable for light hand work.

CONDITION

Good with heavy age. Overall rust and oxidation across all surfaces with scale and pitting consistent with long working use and outdoor or unheated storage. Face shows wear and minor edge chipping; horn intact. Residual paint or whitewash splatter on the base. Structurally sound and stable on its feet.
