Description

Victorian Renaissance Revival Carved Walnut Slipper Chair with Needlepoint Seat

A late 19th-century Renaissance Revival slipper chair in carved walnut, the towering oval back framed by deeply undercut fruit-and-foliage carvings — clusters of pomegranates, grapes, and leafy garlands cascading from a central crest of pierced cartouche work flanked by turned urn finials. The pierced oval splat is filled with bold C-scrolls, acanthus, and a fleur-de-lis terminal, all worked in the high-relief vocabulary that defined American parlor furniture of the 1870s–1880s.

The rounded seat is upholstered in a period floral needlepoint — a central rose-and-foliate cartouche on a dusty rose ground, bordered with cream gimp trim. The chair rests on turned and tapered front legs ending in the original porcelain casters, with splayed rear legs at back. The low seat height marks this as a true slipper or "ladies' chair," designed for the parlor and the rituals of Victorian dress.

CONDITION

Good overall and structurally sturdy. The crest and upper back show a previous repair, with old reinforcement screws and visible joinery work to the pierced splat on the verso. Some wear to the needlepoint seat with mellowing of color, and age-appropriate wear throughout the carved frame. Original porcelain casters intact.
