Mid-Century Modern Wrought Iron Wire Cat-Form Decorative Birdcage
A sculptural wrought iron birdcage shaped as a seated cat, executed in the linear, gestural style associated with mid-century studio metalwork in the vein of Frederick Weinberg and John Risley. The spherical wire-formed head reads with circular eyes, whisker spokes, and upright pointed ears, while the body is rendered as an elongated ovoid cage with vertical wire bars, finished by a flourishing looped tail to one side and exaggerated decorative flourishes flanking the base. A small hinged access door is set into the front of the cage body, and a removable shallow brass-tone metal tray rests inside the bottom for cleaning.
The piece carries a hook at the crown of the head for hanging and is constructed entirely of hand-bent steel wire with soldered joints. Equally functional as a small birdcage or as a freestanding decorative sculpture, its scale and silhouette make it a strong accent for a sunroom, entry, or garden room.
CONDITION
Good overall. Heavy surface oxidation throughout the steel wire consistent with outdoor use, with some flaking and crusty buildup visible at the upper neck/shoulder transition. The brass-tone tray base shows tarnish and minor staining. Structure remains stable and the door operates.
