Description

Antique Cast Iron Borzoi Russian Wolfhound Doorstop, Keene NH Provenance

A full-figured cast iron doorstop modeled as a standing Borzoi, the Russian Wolfhound rendered in profile with the breed's signature elongated muzzle, deep narrow chest, arched loin, and feathered curling tail. The casting captures texture across the coat — wavy combed fur along the body, finer striations down the legs, and a heavily ribboned plume to the tail — finished in white enamel paint with black detailing at the eyes, nose, and muzzle. Unmarked, consistent with American foundry production of decorative cast iron doorstops from the 1920s–1930s, when Borzoi figures were a fashionable choice alongside the breed's Art Deco celebrity moment.

The piece retains an old handwritten paper label reading "Keene NH," tucked along the underside — likely a dealer or estate inventory tag tying the doorstop to a New Hampshire collection or shop. Heavy in the hand at six pounds, with the flat-backed silhouette typical of period iron doorstops meant to brace against a swinging door. No foundry mark located; comparable forms were produced by Hubley, Bradley & Hubbard, and several smaller New England foundries during the same window.

CONDITION

Good with honest age. Scuffing and paint chipping scattered throughout — most concentrated at the eyes, nose, high points of the back, tail tip, and feet, with small losses revealing the dark iron beneath. No structural damage; the figure stands square and solid. Rustic by design after a century of household use.
