Antique Cast Iron Arched-Back Black Cat Doorstop with Glass Eyes
A cast iron black cat doorstop in the classic arched-back, tail-up Halloween pose — the silhouette every collector of American figural iron knows on sight. Hand-painted matte black overall, with green glass set eyes that catch light convincingly and a small painted red tongue between parted lips. The fur is rendered in fine textured striations across the body and haunches, and the face shows real modeling: defined brow, sculpted nose, pricked ears. Two-piece hollow construction joined down the center seam, secured with a single slotted screw at the right flank. Unmarked.
The arched-back cat is one of the most enduring American figural doorstop forms, produced from the late 19th century into the mid-20th by foundries including Hubley, Bradley & Hubbard, and National Foundry, with countless period and later reproductions in the same general silhouette.
CONDITION
Good. Paint is largely intact with a satin sheen across the body; minor rubs and light wear consistent with age and handling. Glass eyes and painted tongue present and bright. Joining screw shows expected patina. No cracks or losses observed.
