Description

Magnavox Power Transistor Portable Stereo Turntable, Model 2SC239, c. 1960s

The Magnavox Power Transistor Stereo was the machine you brought to the party. Not the boxy console your parents kept in the living room — this one latched shut, had a handle, and went where you went. The ivory vinyl case with its trapezoidal silhouette and woven end-panel grilles looks more like a piece of luggage than a record player, which was precisely the point. Pop the two chrome latches and the lid lifts to reveal a four-speed turntable with gold-tone tonearm, 45 rpm spindle adapter stowed in its well, and a four-knob panel — volume, balance, bass, treble — mounted to the right. The side panels deploy as stereo speakers. Fully transistorized, no tubes, no warmup time. You flipped the switch and it played.

Magnavox positioned the Power Transistor line against tube-driven console stereos on two counts: portability and modernity. The transistor was still a selling point in the early 1960s, and Magnavox put it in the name. The gold-script Magnavox Stereo logo stamped inside the lid is clean and bright. The front nameplate badge reads Power Transistor / navox — the "Mag" emblem letters are absent from the exterior badge, a cosmetic gap that the lid branding fully compensates. Tested and working; sound output is excellent.

CONDITION

Very Good overall. Fully functional and tested, with excellent sound quality. Age-appropriate wear to the vinyl exterior includes light scuffing and a small split to the covering near one corner seam. The "Mag" portion of the front badge emblem is absent; all other identification is intact. Interior, turntable mechanism, controls, and speaker grilles are in good order.
