Antique Cast Iron Black Cat Andirons with Glass Eyes, Pair
A figural pair of cast iron andirons modeled as upright sitting cats, each perched atop a scrolled plinth base with a stylized rosette boss and Greek-key returns. The faces are alert — ears pricked, paws forward — with yellow glass eyes secured by flathead screws at the eye sockets, intact on both figures. Wrought iron billet bars extend rearward in the traditional andiron form for supporting fireplace logs. Unmarked, as is typical for the form.
Figural cat andirons enjoyed a strong run of popularity in American homes from the late 19th through the early 20th century, prized for their folk-art character as much as their utility at the hearth. The pairing of heavy black iron bodies with luminous glass eyes — catching firelight and throwing it back across a darkened room — is the design conceit that has kept these pieces in demand among Americana and folk art collectors. For a comparable example of the type, see the matched pair sold through Circle Auction.
CONDITION
Good. Finish wear consistent with age and hearth use, with minor surface scuffing and light high-point wear to the black paint. Both pairs of glass eyes are present and intact. No remarkable damage; structurally sturdy throughout.
