2001 China 50 Yuan Gold Panda, 1/10 oz .999 Fine Gold
2001 People's Republic of China 50 Yuan Gold Panda, struck in .999 fine gold at 1/10 troy ounce by the China Mint. The obverse features the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests at the Temple of Heaven with the legend 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) and the date 2001. The reverse depicts a panda among bamboo with inscriptions "1/10 oz Au .999" and the denomination "50 元."
The 2001 issue is notable within the Gold Panda series as one of two consecutive years (2001 and 2002) in which the China Mint reused the same panda design — a departure from the annual design change that defines the series. This break in tradition prompted collector pressure that led to the resumption of yearly design changes from 2003 onward, making the 2001 and 2002 issues a distinct sub-grouping within the series.
