Antique French Walnut Marble-Top Pot Cupboard, Late 19th Century
A small late-19th-century European nightstand or pot cupboard built in walnut with a removable Carrara marble top. The case carries a single dovetailed drawer above a paneled cabinet door, both fronts laid up in book-matched diagonal veneers that meet at a center seam — a modest but considered touch typical of Continental cabinetwork of the period. Brass escutcheon-style pulls finish the drawer and door.
Behind the cabinet door, a single removable shelf divides the interior into upper and lower compartments, the upper bay measuring 9¾" in height. The form was originally intended for bedside service — chamber pot below, candle and small possessions above — and adapts easily to a modern role as a nightstand, end table, or marble-topped plant stand.
CONDITION
Fair with age-appropriate wear throughout. The lower molding/plinth is a subpar later replacement, with substandard repair work visible elsewhere on the case including a vertical split to one side panel and rough joinery at the base. Veneer surfaces show scratches, scuffs, and darkened areas; the marble top is intact with light staining and edge wear consistent with age. Drawer and door operate.
