1898-S Morgan Silver Dollar
United States silver dollar dated 1898, denomination one dollar, struck in 90% silver.
The obverse displays the left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap with the inscription "LIBERTY" on the headband, wheat and cotton in her hair. The legend "E•PLURIBUS•UNUM" arcs above, with thirteen six-pointed stars encircling the lower border and the date "1898" at the bottom.
The reverse shows a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings, clutching arrows and an olive branch, surrounded by a laurel wreath. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" arcs above with "In God We Trust" in Gothic script, and "ONE DOLLAR" along the lower border. A clear "S" mint mark is present below the wreath, above the "D" in "DOLLAR," identifying this as a San Francisco Mint strike.
The 1898-S is a better-date issue within the Morgan dollar series.
