1896-S Morgan Silver Dollar, San Francisco Mint
1896 Morgan Silver Dollar, designed by George T. Morgan and struck in 90% silver at the San Francisco Mint.
S mint mark, located beneath the wreath on the reverse, above the "DO" of DOLLAR.
The 1896-S is a recognized semi-key date within the Morgan Dollar series. San Francisco's mintage of 5,000,000 pieces was substantial for the year, but heavy circulation in the West and limited bag survival resulted in a coin that is considerably scarcer in higher grades than its mintage figure suggests. The issue is particularly noted for the difficulty of locating well-struck examples.
