Description

1968 Austria 25 Schilling Silver — Lukas von Hildebrandt / Belvedere

1968 Republic of Austria 25 Schilling silver commemorative, struck in .800 fine silver at the Vienna Mint to mark the 300th anniversary of the birth of Baroque architect Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt (1668–1745), designer of the Belvedere Palace complex in Vienna.

The obverse depicts the ornate wrought-iron crown gate of the Upper Belvedere with the palace façade framed within, encircled by the legend LUKAS VON HILDEBRANDT 1668–1745 and the date 1968, with BELVEDERE beneath the gate. The engraver's signature DOOIAK appears at the lower right of the gate structure.

Hildebrandt was one of the central figures of the Austrian Baroque, and the Belvedere — built for Prince Eugene of Savoy between 1714 and 1723 — is the work most identified with him. The 25 Schilling silver commemorative series, struck from 1955 through 1973, honored cultural and historical figures of the Republic.
