Description

Giovanni da Cavino "Paduan" Bronze Medal of Julius Caesar, c. 1550

Italian Renaissance bronze medal after the antique, attributed to Giovanni da Cavino (1500–1570) of Padua, c. 1550. The obverse depicts a laureate left-facing portrait of Julius Caesar with the legend CAESAR DICT[ATOR] and a star (sidus Iulium) in the left field. The reverse bears the famous declaration VENI VIDI VICI in three lines within a laurel wreath, surrounded by a beaded border.

Giovanni da Cavino was a Paduan goldsmith and die-engraver whose bronze medallic restitutions of Roman sestertii — known collectively as "Paduans" — were produced from original dies in 16th-century Padua and admired throughout Renaissance Europe as homages to classical antiquity. Cavino's dies passed through successive hands after his death and were used to produce later strikes (commonly called "afterstrikes") into the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries; without die-state analysis, the period of striking for any given specimen requires specialist attribution. ⚑ Confirm period of strike (16th-century lifetime issue vs. later afterstrike) before publication.
