Jane Moser "Homeward Bound" Watercolor — Canyon de Chelly Navajo Shepherdess Scene
An original watercolor on paper by Arizona artist Jane Moser, signed lower right in the artist's characteristic script. The composition takes an elevated vantage over the floor of Canyon de Chelly, where a Navajo shepherdess in long red skirt moves her flock across the sandy wash beneath towering sandstone walls. A traditional hogan sits sheltered against the cliff base, ringed by cottonwoods, while the meandering wash carries the eye through ribbons of cream, ochre, and lavender shadow. Moser's handling of the rock face — faceted planes of deep ultramarine breaking into warm peach and rose — shows the formal training behind the work.
Moser (B.A. UCLA, M.A. Arizona State University) was a member of the Arizona Watercolor Association, Scottsdale Artist's League, and Contemporary Watercolor Association, and taught drawing and painting in Phoenix. This lot is accompanied by her printed artist biography sheet, which confirms the title "Homeward Bound" in her own hand and pictures two companion Canyon de Chelly subjects from her catalog. The subject — a Navajo woman herding sheep through her ancestral canyon — sits at the intersection of rugged landscape and Native American genre painting, the two strongest collecting currents in regional Arizona watercolor.
Provenance
Accompanied by the artist's original printed promotional/biography sheet, which identifies this work by title in Moser's handwriting and pictures companion works including "White House Ruins" (22" × 30") and "Lavendar Flags" (22" × 30"). The sheet includes a photographic portrait of the artist and her published biographical statement.
Collector's Note
Canyon de Chelly, on Navajo Nation land in northeastern Arizona, has been a touchstone subject for painters from Edward Borein and Maynard Dixon forward. Moser's aerial composition places the viewer on the canyon rim looking down — a perspective that emphasizes the scale of the sandstone and the smallness of the human and animal figures within the landscape. Of interest to both New Mexico landscape collectors and buyers of Native American genre subjects.
CONDITION
Excellent. No damage to the watercolor itself; colors remain saturated with no visible fading. Minor debris present behind the glass at upper right. Frame and double mat are clean and presentable.
