French Farmhouse Garden Trugg with Forged Iron Handle, Early 20th C.
A handsome French country garden trugg, the kind carried out to the kitchen garden at dawn and brought back heavy with tomatoes, lettuces, and cut herbs by mid-morning. The tapered plank body is joined with small nails at the corners, the wood weathered to a soft silver-grey from decades of outdoor use. A wide, hand-forged iron strap arches overhead as the carrying handle, anchored through the long sides with screws and showing the rust, pitting, and traces of old grey paint that come from a working life outdoors.
Form follows function here — the flared sides make for easy loading and unloading, while the iron handle takes the weight a wooden bow couldn't. Originally a utilitarian gardener's basket, it carries beautifully now as a rustic display piece for dried flowers, kindling beside the hearth, market produce on a kitchen island, or a centerpiece for trailing greenery on a long farmhouse table.
CONDITION
Good with age-appropriate wear; sturdy and sound. Wood has weathered to a uniform grey patina with surface checking, dark staining inside the basin, and minor splintering at corners. The iron handle shows heavy oxidation, pitting, and remnants of original grey paint — entirely consistent with long working use and part of the piece's character.
