Turkish Hereke Hand-Knotted Wool Carpet, Herati Design, ca. 2000
A finely woven Turkish Hereke carpet with a hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, executed circa 2000 at a fineness of 340 KPSI. The ivory field carries an all-over Herati pattern — diamond lattices enclosing rosettes and curling sickle leaves — rendered in indigo, madder red, soft rose, sage, ochre, and pale sky blue. A deep indigo main border frames the field with palmette cartouches and scrolling arabesque vinework, flanked by reciprocal floral guard stripes and a fine rosette minor border.
Hereke, on the Sea of Marmara east of Istanbul, has produced court-quality carpets since the imperial workshop was established under Sultan Abdülmecid I in 1843. The town's weavers became known for unusually high knot counts and finely drawn classical Persianate designs, often woven on cotton or silk foundations. The selvedge bears the small woven HEREKE cartouche along one border — the maker's signature mark associated with the town's workshops.
CONDITION
Good. Structurally whole with full pile and intact selvedges and fringes. Light staining scattered throughout the ivory field consistent with household use.
