Iisakki Järvenpää Finnish Puukko Knife Set with Horse-Head Pommels, Kauhava
A two-knife puukko set from Iisakki Järvenpää Oy of Kauhava, Finland — the town long synonymous with traditional Finnish knifemaking. The larger knife carries the maker's script signature etched into the polished stainless blade; the smaller companion blade is marked Kauhava Finland. Both handles are wrapped in stacked birch bark with red fiber spacers, capped at the pommel with cast brass horse-head finials and finished with brass ferrules.
The pair shares a single tooled leather sheath with twin scabbard pockets, embossed front and back with floral and geometric Karelian-style motifs, fitted with brass throat and chape, and hung from a brass belt clip. The puukko remains the working knife of Finland — used for everything from kitchen tasks to fieldcraft — and Iisakki Järvenpää has been making them in Kauhava since 1879. This decorative tourist-grade variant with figural pommels was widely produced for the export and gift market through the later twentieth century.
CONDITION
Good. Blades are sharp and bright with the maker's marks crisp and legible. Brass fittings show light finish wear consistent with age and handling. Leather sheath and birch-bark handles remain clean and intact.
